New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Delhi Traffic Police has issued a special advisory ahead of the Kanwar Yatra, announcing that several major roads in the national capital will remain closed to regular vehicular traffic from 8 AM on July 21 (Monday) to 8 AM on July 23 (Wednesday). The closure is aimed at ensuring the safety and smooth movement of Kanwar devotees who will be passing through Delhi in large numbers during this period.
According to the advisory, traffic restrictions will be enforced on GT Road from Afsara Border to Shahdara, the Seemapuri to Afsara Border route, Anand Vihar to Afsara Border, GT Road leading to Vivek Vihar underpass, Swami Dayanand Marg towards Keshav Chowk in the direction of GT Road, and Pusta Road heading towards Shastri Park. These stretches are expected to experience heavy congestion as thousands of pilgrims move towards their destinations.
To minimize inconvenience, Delhi Traffic Police has suggested alternative routes for commuters. Those traveling from Seemapuri to Afsara Border should use Road No. 56 underpass, while travelers from Anand Vihar towards Afsara Border are advised to take the underpass towards Seemapuri. For those heading from GT Road to Vivek Vihar, Road No. 56 via Afsara Border is the recommended route. People intending to travel towards Swami Dayanand Marg should opt for Vikas Marg or NH-9, while those moving from Pusta Road towards Shastri Park should use NH-9 or Ring Road.
The traffic department has appealed to all vehicle owners and daily commuters to plan their journeys in advance and avoid unnecessary halts or illegal parking on restricted routes. Officials have requested the public to cooperate with traffic personnel and remain patient, as heavy crowds and slow-moving traffic are expected during the yatra. The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage where devotees, known as Kanwariyas, carry holy water from the Ganga river to offer at Shiv temples, leading to significant pedestrian movement on city roads.
For more information, commuters can visit the official Delhi Traffic Police website, follow their social media updates, or contact the traffic helpline. Authorities have assured that additional personnel will be deployed, and barricades will be installed at major junctions to manage the flow of traffic and ensure the safety of both devotees and residents.
