Madurai (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark verdict in the 2020 Sathankulam custodial deaths case, a Tamil Nadu court has sentenced nine policemen to death, calling the crime “rarest of rare.”
Businessman P. Jayaraj and his son J. Bennicks were detained during the COVID-19 lockdown for keeping their shop open beyond permitted hours. They were allegedly tortured in custody, leading to their deaths.
The case sparked nationwide outrage and was later handed over to the CBI, which termed the incident a premeditated act. The court accepted the findings and awarded the maximum punishment.
One of the accused died during the trial. The verdict sends a strong message against custodial violence and abuse of power.
