New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India continues to modernize its defense system with a focus on indigenous missile and fighter jet development. In a major technological advancement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has decided to incorporate certain advanced features from China’s PL-15 missile into India’s upcoming Astra Mark-II project after an in-depth analysis.

The decision came following the recovery and study of a PL-15E missile fired by the Pakistan Air Force during Operation Sindoor. The missile, launched from a JF-17 or J-10C fighter jet, failed to hit its target and landed intact in a field near Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Luckily, it did not detonate and was safely recovered — providing DRDO scientists with a rare intelligence opportunity, as it lacked a self-destruct mechanism. Detailed examination of its technical design and radar system revealed several cutting-edge features that are now being adapted into India’s missile research program.

Advanced Features of Chinese PL-15 Missile

Investigations revealed that the PL-15 missile contains several state-of-the-art systems, including:

  • Advanced propellant-powered mini AESA radar (Active Electronically Scanned Array)
  • Ability to sustain speeds beyond Mach 5
  • Enhanced anti-jamming technology for superior electronic resistance

Pakistan’s New Weapon Acquisition Plan

According to reports, Pakistan Air Force is now planning to acquire long-range PL-17 missiles from China and 2,000 kamikaze drones (YIHA) from Turkey. Additionally, it has submitted a list of high-tech weapon systems to the United States in an attempt to upgrade its aerial combat capabilities.

India’s Countermove: Indigenous Power and Modern Missiles

Meanwhile, India is strengthening its arsenal through both domestic development and strategic procurement. The country is advancing toward the purchase of additional Meteor missiles for its Rafale fighter jets and developing an 800-km range next-generation BrahMos missile, capable of covering all of Pakistan.

Defense experts believe that integrating PL-15’s refined technologies into the Astra Mark-II will significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s long-range air combat capability, giving it a decisive edge in future aerial engagements.
