New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court has granted permission for passive euthanasia (voluntary death) to Ghaziabad resident Harish Rana. The court issued this ruling while hearing a petition filed regarding Harish Rana, who has been bedridden in an unconscious state for nearly 13 years. The court directed that he be admitted to the Palliative Care Department of AIIMS, where life-saving treatment will be withdrawn as part of the medical process.
The court stated that the entire process should be completed with dignity and respect. During the last hearing, the Supreme Court also spoke with Harish's family. His parents, who were 100% disabled, had sought permission for euthanasia after losing hope of recovery. The AIIMS medical report also stated that Harish was unlikely to recover.
During the hearing, Justice Pardiwala said, "This is a very sad report. This is a difficult decision for us as well, but we cannot continue to subject this young man to endless suffering. The time has come for us to make a final decision."
Harish Rana fell from the fourth floor of his hostel while studying in Chandigarh in 2013, suffering serious head injuries. He has been bedridden and unconscious ever since. The prolonged bedridden period has also left him with numerous injuries.
