Four-Time CM Passes Away After Long Illness, Leaves Behind a Remarkable Legacy

Shillong (The Uttam Hindu): Senior Meghalaya leader and four-time Chief Minister Donwa Dethwelson Lapang died in a hospital in Shillong on Friday evening. He was 93 years old and was suffering from age-related diseases for a long time. Lapang is survived by his wife Amethyst Linda Jones Blah and two children. The Meghalaya government has announced to cremate him with state honors on Monday.
Born on 10 April 1932, Lapang started his political career in 1972 as an independent candidate from Nongpoh seat. He held the post of Chief Minister four times from 1992 to 2010. He was associated with the Congress party for a long time, however, in 2018 he joined the National People's Party (NPP). Recently he was working as the Chief Advisor to the State Government.
His role in the formation of Ri-Bhoi district (1992) is particularly remembered. Coming from a humble background, Lapang helped his mother run a tea stall in his childhood and entered politics after working as a labourer, teacher and government employee.
Former MP and Congress leader Vincent H. Pala was present in the hospital when he died. As soon as the news spread, a large number of people and leaders of various political parties reached the hospital and his residence in Nongpoh to pay tribute.
