New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – The Karnataka government has made a significant decision in response to the increasing number of incidents and deaths caused by stray dog bites. Now, if a person dies from a dog bite, their family will receive a compensation of ₹5 lakh.

The government has also provided compensation for victims who suffer serious injuries. If the dog has punctured the skin, caused a deep wound, a laceration, or multiple bites, the victim will receive a total of 5,000 rupees. Of this, 3,500 rupees will be given directly to the victim, and 1,500 rupees will go to the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust for treatment.

Former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, quoted by a newspaper, said that so far this year, there have been nearly 525,000 dog bites in Tamil Nadu, and 28 people have died from rabies. Chidambaram wrote on social media, "The sentiments of dog lovers are valid, but these alarming statistics should also be taken into account.

In response to the increasing incidence of dog bites, the Supreme Court has ordered all states and union territories to immediately remove all stray dogs from public places such as schools, colleges, hospitals, sports complexes, bus stands, and railway stations. The court has clearly stated that dogs captured from these places will not be released back into the same areas after sterilization and vaccination. The court stated that it will be the responsibility of the institutions to capture the dogs and send them to designated dog shelters.
