High Court calls Aadhaar update a fundamental right, directs UIDAI to boost access

Chennai (The Uttam Hindu): The Madras High Court has made a significant observation regarding the Aadhaar card, stating that updating one's Aadhaar data is a fundamental and statutory right. The court stated that citizens should not face any difficulties in doing so, and that the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) should ensure that local Aadhaar update facilities are readily available across the country.
A single bench of Justice G.R. Swaminathan made this observation while hearing a petition. He said that Aadhaar has now become the basis for many government schemes and services, and citizens should have the right to correct or update any errors in Aadhaar without difficulty.
The court stated that since Aadhaar is required for most government services, updating it also becomes a constitutional right of citizens. If people have to travel long distances or stand in line for hours for this process, it violates their rights. The bench directed the UIDAI to increase the number of Aadhaar update centers across the country and ensure that citizens in rural and remote areas have easy access to Aadhaar services.
