If It Was Rape, Why the Love Bites?” Kolkata Lawyer’s Shocking Question Stuns Case

Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu) : In the ongoing Kolkata law student rape case, the lawyer representing the main accused, Monojit Mishra, has claimed that crucial details are being withheld by the prosecution. Speaking to the media, advocate Raju Ganguly said that, in addition to scratch marks, love bites were also found on Monojit's body—information he alleges the prosecution has deliberately not disclosed.
Monojit Mishra, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress student wing, is one of three individuals arrested for the alleged rape of a 24-year-old law student inside the South Calcutta Law College campus on the evening of June 25. The accused have been remanded to police custody until July 8. “The prosecution has told you about the scratch marks, but have they mentioned the love bites? If it was truly rape, love bites would not be found on the accused’s body,” Ganguly argued, referring to medico-legal reports that confirmed the presence of scratch marks, which are seen as signs of resistance by the survivor.
Alleging a “conspiracy to frame” his client, Ganguly questioned the delay in lodging the police complaint. “The incident allegedly occurred at 10:30 p.m., yet the complaint was filed only at 4:45 p.m. the next day. If she was confined, why didn’t she contact her parents or approach the police immediately after leaving the college?” he asked.
Regarding a video allegedly found on Monojit’s phone, Ganguly claimed it is being misrepresented. “I say this with full responsibility—it is not a video of torture. You’re mature enough to understand what kind of video it is if there are love bites on someone’s neck,” he said.
Ganguly also raised questions about the police investigation, particularly whether the survivor’s mobile phone was seized and if her call records were examined. “We’ve asked whether the victim’s phone has been sent for forensic analysis. Have her call details been checked? These aspects are critical to the case,” he stated. The incident has triggered public outrage across Kolkata, especially as it comes just months after another high-profile case involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the city.
