Ottawa (The Uttam Hindu): Ahead of the proposed visit of Prime Minister Mark Carney to New Delhi, Canada has indicated a shift in its position, stating that India is no longer being linked to recent violent incidents in the country. The statement is being viewed as a positive development in bilateral relations. According to media reports, a senior Canadian official said that security-related discussions between the two countries have progressed and that regular dialogue continues at high levels, including between national security advisers. Officials expressed confidence that such activities are no longer taking place.
Earlier, during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada had accused India of involvement in violence and foreign interference, allegations that India consistently rejected as baseless. Despite the latest developments, some Sikh groups have continued to raise concerns. British Columbia-based religious leader Moninder Singh said that police in Vancouver had warned him and his family about possible threats. He stated that similar warnings had been issued several times since the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in British Columbia in June 2023.
Relations between the two countries had deteriorated sharply after Nijjar’s killing, when Canada alleged involvement of individuals linked to the Indian government, leading to the expulsion of diplomats on both sides. India denied the accusations and maintained that Canada had failed to act against extremist elements. The current Canadian government has said it is committed to addressing security concerns through cooperation with India and noted that there are presently no significant concerns about foreign interference. Ottawa has also emphasized that respect for the rule of law and continued law enforcement cooperation will guide the gradual restoration of ties, as both countries seek to improve relations and expand trade opportunities.
