Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant administrative move, the government has decided to shift fencing along the India-Pakistan border by around 200 meters. As part of this initiative, land will be acquired in six border districts of Punjab, aiming to strengthen border security while also facilitating local development.

To streamline the process, the government has introduced key changes in land acquisition procedures. All powers related to acquisition have now been delegated to Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), who will exercise the authority of a Collector. This will enable faster decision-making on compensation, rehabilitation, and other administrative matters at the district level.

Officials stated that the decision is expected to directly benefit farmers. Earlier, compensation and rehabilitation involved lengthy procedures, but with decentralization, decisions can now be taken more quickly at the local level. This is likely to ensure timely compensation and improved rehabilitation support for affected landowners.

For farmers residing in border areas, the move is being seen as a relief. Authorities claim that the new system will enhance transparency and reduce disputes related to land acquisition.

Preparations are currently underway in the concerned districts to begin surveys and initiate the acquisition process. Formal proceedings are expected to commence soon.
