New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Indian Air Force and Navy are set to receive a historic boost. In a key meeting, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets and six P-8I Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft. This is considered one of India's largest and most significant defense procurement plans to date. This decision comes at a time when challenges from China and Pakistan are steadily increasing along the border.

4.5 generation Rafale is a nightmare for the enemy

Given the growing military challenges from China and Pakistan, the Indian Air Force desperately needs modern, reliable, and quick-reaction fighter aircraft. The Rafale is a 4.5-generation, state-of-the-art fighter aircraft. This aircraft is not new to the Air Force; it has already proven itself to be a tried-and-tested fighter. In Operation Sindoor, the Rafale demonstrated its formidable lethality, bringing Pakistan to its knees, which is why the Air Force has placed it at the top of its priority list.

Capable of air-to-air and ground strikes

The technology of these 114 aircraft is considered the best in the world. They include features such as the modern AESA radar system, the long-range Meteor missile, and the Scalp stealth cruise missile. Additionally, their advanced electronic warfare suite makes them highly lethal in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. These technologies enable the Indian Air Force to inflict significant damage without even entering enemy territory.

Big decision before Macron's visit, now waiting for CCS approval

Following DAC approval, the proposal will now be sent to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final approval. This deal will provide the Indian Air Force with six to seven new squadrons. Currently, the Air Force has approximately 30 squadrons, while the requirement is for 42. This decision is also significant because French President Emmanuel Macron is arriving on an official visit to India on February 17th. It is expected that this defense deal will be a key topic of discussion during his visit.

India's strength will increase in the sea as well

India's surveillance capabilities will be strengthened both in the sky and at sea. The DAC also approved the purchase of six new P-8I Poseidon aircraft for the Navy. These aircraft are considered highly effective in detecting enemy submarines, long-range maritime patrol, and multi-mission operations. The Indian Navy already operates 12 such aircraft, whose more than 40,000 accident-free flying hours are a testament to their reliability. Amidst China's deployment on the LAC and Pakistan's activities, this decision will prove to be a milestone in making India's security impenetrable.
