New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, raised concerns over the growing misuse of religious identity as a political tool and strongly criticized Pakistan during his address.

Harish said the world needs to recognize that the political use of religious identity is increasing rapidly, involving both state and non-state actors. He stated that Pakistan, India’s western neighbour, leaves no stone unturned in fabricating stories of Islamophobia in the region.

He questioned how the persecution of the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan should be described. He also referred to the forced return of Afghan nationals and incidents of airstrikes during the holy month of Ramadan, asking how such actions should be categorized. He said it is ironic that a country facing such issues continues to make accusations against others.

India’s envoy further said that Pakistan has consistently used the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as a political platform against India. He alleged that the OIC has repeatedly made false and baseless allegations against the country.

Harish emphasized that Muslims in India, including those in Jammu and Kashmir, actively participate in the democratic process by electing their representatives and expressing their views freely. He stated, “There is no situation of Islamophobia in India. All communities, including Muslims, live together in peace and harmony.”

He urged the United Nations to focus its time and resources on building inclusive societies where every individual, regardless of religion, is guaranteed equality, dignity and the rule of law.
