Indian passport strength rises sharply: 10-rank jump in Henley Index, Indians can now travel visa-free to 56 countries

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Indian travellers have reason to cheer as the global standing of the Indian passport has improved significantly. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, India has recorded a major jump, climbing 10 places to reach the 75th position. Last year, India was ranked 85th. This sharp improvement reflects increased global mobility for Indian citizens and easier access to international travel.
Visa-free travel to 56 countries
With the improved ranking, Indian passport holders can now travel to 56 countries without obtaining a visa in advance. These destinations either allow visa-free entry or provide visa-on-arrival facilities. The Henley Passport Index ranks countries based on the number of destinations their citizens can access without a prior visa. A higher rank indicates stronger global travel freedom and convenience.
Best ranking achieved in 2006
While the latest jump is encouraging, India has not yet matched its best historical performance. The Indian passport achieved its highest-ever ranking in 2006, when it stood at 71st place. In recent years, particularly around 2024, India’s rank had slipped to 80th and later to 85th, indicating reduced travel access. The current improvement signals renewed progress and growing international acceptance.
Singapore tops the global passport rankings
At the global level, Singapore continues to hold the top position, with its passport offering visa-free access to 192 destinations. Jointly placed at second position are Japan and South Korea, whose citizens can travel to 187 countries without prior visas. The third spot is shared by Sweden and United Arab Emirates, with access to 186 destinations. Several European nations, along with Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand, continue to dominate the top 10 due to their extensive global reach.
