New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a major step toward digital transformation and automation, Indian Railways (IR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to implement an AI-powered Machine Vision Inspection System (MVIS) aimed at enhancing rolling stock safety and operational efficiency.

This advanced AI/ML-based technology solution will capture high-resolution images of under-gear components of moving trains. It will automatically detect loose, missing, or hanging parts, and issue real-time alerts for prompt action, reducing manual inspection efforts and preventing potential service disruptions or accidents.

The MoU was formally signed by Sumit Kumar, Director (Project & Planning), Railway Board, and Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical), DFCCIL, during a ceremony held at Rail Bhavan, New Delhi.

Under this agreement, DFCCIL will be responsible for the procurement, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of four MVIS units. This is the first time such a system is being introduced in Indian Railways. The initiative aligns with IR’s broader goal of integrating smart, intelligent safety systems into its operational ecosystem.

The Railway Ministry said in a statement:

“This initiative will pave the way for digital transformation in railway safety and supports Indian Railways’ long-term vision of building a future-ready infrastructure.”

In parallel with technological upgrades, Indian Railways is also accelerating its recruitment drive. Over 9,000 appointment letters have already been issued in the first quarter of FY 2025–26, with a target of over 50,000 new jobs by the end of the current financial year. Since November 2024, the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has actively conducted Computer-Based Tests (CBT) for 1.86 crore applicants, across seven major recruitment notifications, to fill various technical and non-technical positions nationwide.
