New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India and the United States signed a major defence agreement worth ₹7,995 crore on Friday. This deal is aimed at strengthening the maintenance support for the Indian Navy’s MH-60R helicopters. The Ministry of Defence has signed two Letters of Offer and Acceptance with the US government for this purpose.

According to the Ministry, the agreement will provide follow-on support and supply assistance for the Navy’s MH-60R multi-role helicopter fleet. The signing ceremony was held in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The ministry confirmed that the contract has been executed under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.

The sustainment support package will offer a comprehensive maintenance and support framework for the MH-60R helicopters. This includes the supply of spares, support equipment, production assistance, training and technical support. Repair and replenishment of critical parts are also part of the contract. Under this agreement, India will also set up intermediate-level repair facilities and periodic maintenance inspection centres.

Defence experts believe these new facilities will boost long-term self-reliance and reduce dependence on the US for essential components. Indian MSMEs and domestic companies are also expected to gain new opportunities in defence manufacturing and services. The support package is likely to significantly enhance the capability of the MH-60R helicopters. The upgraded technology and support systems will improve their operational availability, maintainability and overall reliability.

The MH-60R helicopters of the Indian Navy are equipped with advanced anti-submarine warfare systems and form a key part of India’s maritime assets acquired from the US. With this agreement, their deployment capabilities will expand further. After the support package is implemented, these helicopters will be able to operate more efficiently from coastal bases as well as naval warships. This will help the Navy achieve stronger performance during both primary and secondary missions.

Experts say the agreement will strengthen the Navy’s operational readiness and marks another step towards a self-reliant and robust maritime defence framework for India.
