New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has given the strongest warning to Pakistan so far regarding the Indus Water Treaty. He said in clear words that until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism, the Indus Water Treaty will be considered cancelled. Giving historical reference, the Foreign Minister said, "Blood and water cannot flow together."

Speaking during a debate in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the External Affairs Minister described the Indus Water Treaty as an “extraordinary agreement”. “I cannot think of any such agreement in the world where a country has allowed its major rivers to flow into another country and has also given up its rights over them. This was an extraordinary agreement and it is important for us to remember the history behind it,” he said.

Taking a dig at the opposition parties, he said, "I heard people yesterday, some people are uncomfortable with history. They want historical things to be forgotten, perhaps because they don't suit them. They like to remember only a few selected things."

Clarifying India's policy towards Pakistan, the Foreign Minister said in a very strong tone that until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism from its soil, the Indus Water Treaty should be considered effectively suspended or cancelled.

This statement of Dr. Jaishankar is being seen as a major diplomatic warning to Pakistan. He has made it clear that India will no longer look at water and terrorism separately and Pakistan will have to pay the price for its actions.
