Justice Surya Kant Appointed as the Next Chief Justice of India, to Succeed CJI B.R. Gavai

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Justice Surya Kant, a senior judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will take the oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025.
The current Chief Justice, Justice B.R. Gavai, is set to retire on November 23, 2025. As per tradition, he had recommended Justice Surya Kant’s name as his successor. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment on social media platform X, stating, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 24, 2025. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to him.”
Justice Surya Kant’s Tenure to Last 14 Months
Born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. His tenure as Chief Justice will last 14 months, ending on February 9, 2027, when he reaches the age of retirement.
Justice Surya Kant brings with him over two decades of judicial experience, having delivered several landmark judgments on issues such as the abrogation of Article 370, freedom of speech, democracy, corruption, environmental protection, and gender equality.
