New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – India will receive its new Chief Justice today. Justice Surya Kant, who rose from a humble middle-class background to the top position in the country's Supreme Court, will be sworn in as India's 53rd Chief Justice today. His life is an example of struggle, discipline, and relentless hard work that can serve as an inspiration for young people across the country.


Born on February 10, 1962, in the small town of Hisar,

Justice Surya Kant grew up in a humble family. It was there that he began his legal studies and practice. Through his talent and hard work, he steadily progressed, distinguishing himself at every stage of the judiciary. He also demonstrated academic excellence, achieving "First in First Class" in his Master's in Law from Kurukshetra University in 2011.


How many months tenure?

Justice Surya Kant was appointed the next Chief Justice on October 30 this year. He will hold the post for approximately 15 months. He will retire on February 9, 2027, upon attaining the age of 65. He authored several notable judgments in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Surya Kant was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018.

- His tenure as a Supreme Court judge is known for delivering judgments on the abrogation of Article 370, freedom of expression, and citizenship rights. -

Justice Surya Kant was part of the bench that recently heard the President's consultations regarding the powers of the Governor and President in dealing with bills passed by the state legislature. This decision is eagerly awaited, and could impact all states.

- He was part of the bench that suspended the colonial-era sedition law and directed that no new FIRs be filed under it until the government reviewed it.

- Justice Surya Kant also asked the Election Commission to make public the details of 6.5 million voters excluded from the draft voter list in Bihar.
