Karnataka government takes action in obscene video case, DGP Ramachandra Rao suspended

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Karnataka government has suspended senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (DGP) and head of the Civil Rights Enforcement Directorate (DCRE), following the circulation of alleged obscene videos on social media. The videos, which triggered widespread controversy in the state, reportedly show the officer in an objectionable situation with a woman.
Ramachandra Rao has strongly denied all allegations, claiming that he has been framed and that the videos are completely fake. After the videos surfaced, he went to meet Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara at his residence, but the meeting did not take place. Speaking to the media outside the residence, Rao reiterated that the entire episode was fabricated.
The viral clips allegedly show Ramachandra Rao behaving inappropriately with a woman inside his office. In one video, he is seen seated on a chair in police uniform, while another shows him wearing a suit. In both videos, the Indian national flag and the official police emblem are clearly visible in the background, indicating that the footage was recorded inside his office.
According to sources, the videos were recorded by CCTV cameras installed in the office and are said to be nearly a year old. It is also being reported that the footage predates the arrest of film actress Ranya Rao in a gold smuggling case. However, it remains unclear why the videos have surfaced at this particular time.
Ramachandra Rao has earlier been linked to controversies as well. He is the stepfather of actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested in March 2025 on charges of gold smuggling. She was accused of misusing government protocol by allegedly taking advantage of her father’s official position.
