Mahesh Dixit named new IB Chief; Kashmir operations expert to lead India’s top intel agency
A doctor-turned-IPS with deep counter-terrorism and Kashmir expertise, he led IB operations in Ladakh and played a key role post-Article 370 abrogation

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Preparations are complete for a major overhaul of India's premier intelligence agency, the Intelligence Bureau (IB). The central government has promoted Special Director Mahesh Dixit and appointed him as the new Chief of the Intelligence Bureau. According to an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday night, Mahesh Dixit's tenure will be for the next two years from the date he assumes office. With this important appointment, the country's internal security and intelligence system has now been given the leadership of a highly experienced and tough officer.
Considered an expert on Kashmir affairs and counter-terrorism
Doctor-turned-IPS officer Mahesh Dixit is a dynamic officer of the 1993 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He has extensive and distinguished experience in counter-terrorism operations. Dixit is considered particularly knowledgeable about Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Before becoming Intelligence Bureau Chief, he commanded IB operations in Ladakh with great efficiency. He also served as the head of the Kashmir Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau.
Played the most important role after the abrogation of Article 370
One of the greatest achievements of Mahesh Dixit's career was the period in August 2019, when Article 370 was revoked from Jammu and Kashmir. At that time, the situation in the Valley was extremely sensitive and tense. During this critical time, Dixit, commanding the intelligence system, played a key role in maintaining law and order in Jammu and Kashmir and thwarting any major terrorist plots. This ability, combined with his deep understanding of the ground situation, has propelled him to this top position.
Tapan Deka will be replaced by the country's intelligence command
As the new IB chief, Mahesh Dixit will replace Tapan Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. Deka has served as the Intelligence Bureau chief since 2022. Mahesh Dixit will now assume command of the country's most important intelligence agency, facing the daunting challenge of addressing changing global circumstances and cross-border conspiracies.
