Mumbai(The Uttam Hindu): The ongoing Maratha reservation agitation at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan has reached a critical juncture. On the third day of his indefinite hunger strike, prominent Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil's health has sharply deteriorated, prompting medical intervention. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government’s sub-committee on Maratha reservation began a crucial emergency meeting to find a resolution to the growing crisis.

Jarange, who has refused both food and water since Friday, began experiencing severe discomfort late Saturday night. His condition worsened by Sunday morning, prompting the deployment of a medical team to Azad Maidan. Doctors have warned that if the fast continues, Jarange’s condition may become critical.

Over the past two days, nearly 100 protestors have reported symptoms like body aches and headaches, seeking treatment at GT and St. George Hospitals in the city.

High-Level Government Huddle Begins

In response to the deteriorating situation, the state government swung into action. A high-stakes meeting of the Maratha Reservation Sub-Committee, chaired by Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, began at 11 AM today at his residence.

Sources say this meeting is pivotal and could shape the next steps in the state’s approach. On Saturday, Justice Shinde and the sub-committee secretary had held a 45-minute dialogue with Jarange Patil, which ended without resolution. Later that night, Vikhe Patil also briefed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the evolving situation.

Jarange Fires Back at Government Narrative

Speaking to the media, Jarange accused the government of spreading misinformation. “We are not asking for a share in the OBC quota,” he clarified. “We simply want 10% reservation under the Kunbi category based on rightful eligibility for Marathas. We are not here for politics — we are here for justice.” He warned the government not to test the Maratha community’s patience, demanding immediate, concrete action instead of bureaucratic delay.
