New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): In a landmark move for women empowerment in India, the Modi government announced the expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on the first day of Navratri. Under the initiative, 25 lakh women will receive free LPG connections in the financial year 2025-26, taking the total number of beneficiaries under the scheme to 10.60 crore.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on social media, “On this auspicious day of Navratri, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all mothers and sisters associated with the Ujjwala family. This step will not only bring joy during this holy festival but also strengthens our commitment to women’s empowerment.”

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, called this decision evidence of the Prime Minister’s commitment to treating women with “the respect of Goddess Durga.” He posted on X, “This further strengthens our resolve to honor and empower mothers and sisters.”

Puri also mentioned that the Indian government will spend ₹2,050 on each new connection, which includes a free LPG cylinder along with a gas stove and regulator.

He added, “The Ujjwala scheme is not just a program but a torch of revolution reaching every corner of the country.” Currently, with a ₹300 subsidy provided by the Modi government, refill prices for over 10.33 crore Ujjwala families are only ₹553 per cylinder, which is lower than many other LPG-producing countries.

This Navratri initiative reinforces the government’s vision of female empowerment, energy accessibility, and social welfare.
