New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has once again come under controversy after objectionable slogans were raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah inside the campus. The sloganeering was reportedly done in support of Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid and sedition accused Sharjeel Imam.

According to reports, the incident took place late at night outside Sabarmati Hostel, where students associated with left-leaning organisations staged a protest. During the demonstration, slogans such as “Modi-Shah your grave will be dug,” “The grave of Ambani rule will be dug on JNU land,” and “The grave of Adani will be dug on JNU land” were raised, further escalating the controversy.

The protest was reportedly organised in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. Protesters also raised slogans against the Supreme Court verdict. Sharjeel Imam faces charges of sedition over alleged remarks about cutting off the ‘Chicken’s Neck’ to separate the Northeast from India, while Umar Khalid is accused of being involved in the conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots.

On Monday, the Supreme Court stated that prosecution material indicated the involvement of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in planning the Delhi riots, mobilising people, and providing strategic direction. Following this observation, the court dismissed their bail applications.

The sloganeering at JNU drew sharp reactions from BJP leaders. Minister Kapil Mishra said on social media platform X that supporters of extremists, terrorists, and rioters are agitated as action is being taken against them. BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa also condemned the incident, calling it completely unacceptable and demanding strict action against those involved in such activities.

It is noteworthy that JNU has witnessed similar controversies in the past. Incidents of protests and objectionable slogans have earlier brought the university into the spotlight. The latest episode outside Sabarmati Hostel has once again placed JNU at the centre of national attention.
