Monsoon Mayhem: Torrential Rains Kill 10, Injure 25, Destroys Infrastructure

Ranchi (The Uttam Hindu): At least 10 people have died in different accidents due to continuous rain in various parts of Jharkhand for the last 48 hours.
Roads have submerged in water in cities like Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Jamshedpur, Chatra, Simdega. More than 20 incidents of bridge washing away, house collapse, well sinking, lightning and road accidents have been reported. More than 25 people have been injured in these accidents. NDRF teams have had to be deployed at many places to rescue people trapped in the strong current of water.
On Wednesday itself, the state government had issued a red alert in Ranchi, Lohardaga, Simdega, Khunti and Gumla districts and an orange alert in Ramgarh, Koderma, Chatra, Palamu and Garhwa. Most of the rivers in these districts are in spate and flood-like situation has arisen in some places. People have been appealed not to come out of their homes till Friday unless there is urgent work. Schools have also been closed in many districts including Ranchi. Two children playing nearby drowned in a semi-constructed well in Somar Bazar locality of Murhu block of Khunti district when the soil of the well suddenly collapsed. To save them, the NDRF and the local administration carried out a rescue operation for 22 hours, but when both the children were taken out on Thursday afternoon, they had already stopped breathing. The names of the deceased children are Amit Hunni Purti and Ashish Topno.
On Thursday, 19-year-old Rajkumar Manjhi died after being trapped under a mud wall that collapsed in Dodma village under Torpa police station area in Khunti district. This accident happened when Rajkumar was busy repairing the house to stop the water falling from the mud roof. A mud house collapsed due to rain in Chakradharpur of West Singhbhum (Chaibasa), in which a woman Gurubari Dongo died and three children were injured. A six-year-old girl also died due to house collapse in Tamar of Ranchi district. Six workers got stuck on the under-construction bridge due to rising water level on Wednesday evening on the Karkari river between Sonpur and Doreya in Adki police station area of Khunti district. The workers remained trapped on the bridge the whole night on Wednesday. To evacuate them safely, the NDRF team is engaged in rescue operation on Thursday.
The areas around the Sapahi river in Namkum police station area of Ranchi have been submerged in water. More than 25 people trapped in the water here have been rescued and taken to a safe place. The bridge on the Banai river in Pelol village between Simdega-Khunti collapsed due to rain. Due to this, the connection with Odisha via Simdega has been disrupted. A truck is also stuck on the broken bridge. A truck was washed away with water and fell into the river at Tetriyakhand colliery in Balumath block area of Latehar. The Bodam-Patamda road passing near Pardih Kali temple on the Tata-Ranchi main road in Jamshedpur has been completely submerged. Many shops have been submerged due to the rise in the Bhairavi river due to heavy rains in Rajrappa of Ramgarh. A bus crashed on a waterlogged road in Barkatha block area of Hazaribagh, in which 10 people were injured. Earlier on Wednesday, five people were killed in three road accidents in Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro.
