New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave a major update in Parliament on Wednesday regarding the country's first bullet train project. He said that the Gujarat part (Vapi to Sabarmati) of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is planned to be completed by December 2027, while the entire project is expected to be completed by December 2029.

The Railway Minister shared this important information in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. He informed that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is under construction with technical and financial assistance from Japan. This project will prove to be a milestone in the transport sector of the country.

Ashwini Vaishnav said that this 508 km long project will pass through Gujarat, Maharashtra and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. There is a plan to build a total of 12 stations on this route, which include Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

Presenting the financial outline of the project, the minister said that its total estimated cost is around Rs 1,08,000 crore. A major chunk of this huge cost, about 81 per cent (Rs 88,000 crore), is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the form of loan.

The remaining 19 percent of the project cost, which is Rs 20,000 crore, will be borne by India. The Indian contribution is 50% from the Ministry of Railways, while the remaining share will be contributed by the governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat at 25 percent each.
