India launches rescue mission: 1,200 Citizens evacuated from Iran via Armenia and Azerbaijan amid rising tensions
The government is using alternative routes via Armenia and Azerbaijan to ensure safe returns, providing food, accommodation, and travel arrangements

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid rising tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States in West Asia, the Indian government has intensified a massive evacuation operation to ensure the safe return of its citizens. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi that over 1,200 Indian citizens have been safely evacuated from Iran so far. These include 845 students, who constitute the largest portion of the operation.
According to data shared by the government, of the total evacuated citizens, 996 have been sent to Armenia and 204 to Azerbaijan. Coordination with the Indian missions and local authorities in both countries is being ensured to ensure the safe return of all citizens to India. Full arrangements for food, accommodation, and travel have been made during transit. Due to the disruption of direct air routes, the Government of India prepared alternative evacuation plans through Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Ministry of External Affairs, while keeping Indian embassies in both countries on alert, provided swift assistance to ensure immediate relief to the citizens.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also maintained regular contact with global leaders. On March 28, he spoke by phone with Mohammed bin Salman, during which they discussed in-depth the current situation in the region. The Prime Minister condemned attacks on energy infrastructure and stressed the need to maintain security and unhindered navigation along sea routes.
Amid the deteriorating situation, there has been a significant increase in the number of passengers returning to India from West Asia. So far, more than 600,000 Indians have returned home from the region. The government, in collaboration with all relevant ministries, is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to continue relief operations if needed.
