Lakhimpur Kheri (The Uttam Hindu): A heartbreaking accident took place late Tuesday night in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district. On the Dhekherwa–Girjapuri Highway, a speeding Alto car lost control and plunged into the Sharda canal. Five people travelling in the car died on the spot, while the driver was critically injured.

According to police, all the victims and the injured driver belonged to the same village and were returning home after attending a wedding. The accident occurred in the dark of night, and due to high speed, the driver failed to control the vehicle, causing it to fall directly into the canal. The water level in the canal was high, leading the car to submerge completely.

Upon receiving information, the Paduwa police reached the location. With the help of villagers and a crane, the car was pulled out of the canal. Five bodies trapped inside were recovered. Their identities have not yet been fully confirmed, but initial reports suggest they were all young men who had gone to the wedding for DJ arrangements.

The injured driver was immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ramiya Behar, where his condition remains critical. Doctors say he has sustained severe head and chest injuries.

The entire area is in mourning after the death of five people from the same village. Locals are demanding stricter safety measures from the administration due to frequent accidents on this highway. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and registered a case. Preliminary investigation points to overspeeding and driver negligence as the main causes of the crash.
