PM Modi Announces Further GST Cuts, Tax Burden to Reduce for Common Citizens

Noida (The Uttam Hindu): On the first day of Navratri (September 22), after announcing significant GST cuts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave another piece of good news to the nation on Thursday. He indicated that tax rates will be further reduced in the future, stating that as the country’s economy strengthens, the tax burden on the common citizen will decrease.
Inaugurating the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show, PM Modi said, “Today the nation is celebrating the GST savings festival. But I want to tell you that we will not stop here. With the blessings of our countrymen, this series of GST reforms will continue.” He promised that as the economy grows stronger, the tax burden will be reduced.
The Prime Minister compared the tax structure before 2014 with the present and explained the full calculations of savings. He said, “If a family purchased goods worth ₹1 lakh before 2014, they had to pay approximately ₹25,000 in taxes. Now, after the ‘Next Generation GST’, the same ₹1 lakh purchase requires only ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 in taxes.”
Giving examples, he explained that a shirt costing ₹1,000 previously attracted ₹117 in tax, which has now reduced to just ₹35. Similarly, everyday items like toothpaste and shampoo, which earlier attracted a 31% tax, are now significantly cheaper.
PM Modi highlighted the benefits of tax cuts on vehicles, stating that it has benefited everyone from farmers to the middle class. Before 2014, buying a tractor attracted over ₹70,000 in taxes, which has now reduced to just ₹30,000, saving farmers ₹40,000 per tractor.
Similarly, taxes on three-wheelers have dropped from ₹55,000 to ₹35,000, giving a ₹20,000 saving. Two-wheelers have also become more affordable; compared to 2014, a scooter now costs ₹8,000 less and a motorcycle ₹9,000 less. The Prime Minister emphasized that these reforms ensure savings for both the poor and the middle class.
