Praveen Sood Gets One-Year Extension as CBI Director, to Continue Until May 2026

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The central government has decided to extend the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood for one year. The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday. Praveen Sood's current term was to end on May 25, 2025, which has now been extended till May 24, 2026. Sood assumed office as CBI Director on May 25, 2023 for a period of two years.

According to officials, the decision to extend his tenure was taken at a high-level selection committee meeting held on Monday. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Based on the recommendations of the selection committee, the ACC approved the extension of Sood's tenure by one year.

Praveen Sood is a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Karnataka cadre. Before his appointment as CBI Director, he was serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka. Born in 1964 in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Sood received a degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. At the age of just 22, he joined the Indian Police Service and held many important responsibilities in his career.

Under Sood's leadership, the CBI has expedited the investigation of several complex and high-profile cases. The extension of his tenure is being seen as an important step to ensure stability and continuity of leadership in the investigating agency.
