Raipur (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark victory against Naxalism, security forces and the government of Chhattisgarh achieved a historic breakthrough as 208 active Naxalites operating in the dense forests of Dandakaranya surrendered together. Officials described it as the largest-ever surrender in the state’s history. The ultras also laid down 153 deadly weapons, including AK-47 and INSAS rifles.
With this massive surrender, the region of Abujhmad, once considered a Naxalite stronghold, has now become nearly Naxal-free, signaling the collapse of “Red Terror” across North Bastar.
According to officials, both central and state anti-Naxal strategies are yielding results. In the past two days alone, a total of 258 Naxalites have returned to the mainstream,197 from Chhattisgarh and 61 from neighboring Maharashtra. Several senior commanders were among those who surrendered, expressing their desire to start a new life outside the jungle.
Calling it a “historic milestone”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that Abujhmad and North Bastar are now free from Naxal dominance. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminate Naxalism nationwide by March 31, 2026.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also welcomed the development, terming it the beginning of a new era of peace and development in the state. He said, “Naxalism is collapsing on every front politically, militarily, and ideologically.”
The surrendered rebels not only turned themselves in but also handed over their symbol of power modern and traditional weapons to the security forces. The surrendered arsenal includes 19 AK-47 rifles, 23 INSAS rifles, 17 SLRs, one INSAS LMG, 11 BGL launchers, and four carbines. Additionally, 36 .303 rifles, 41 twelve-bore guns, and a pistol were also recovered. Security agencies said this massive arms collection is a significant relief for forces in the region.
Abujhmad, a fortress for Maoist insurgents, will now connect to the mainstream of development, with plans for new roads, schools, and hospitals. Locals can finally live without fear. According to government estimates, only a few parts of South Bastar remain affected, which are expected to be cleared soon.
Under the government’s rehabilitation policy, all surrendered Naxalites will receive support to start a new life including financial aid, livelihood training, family protection, and education for their children enabling them to reintegrate into society as responsible citizens.
