S Jaishankar accuses UN members of protecting terrorist groups: ‘All is not well in the UN'

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations is being celebrated. A program was organized in India's capital, Delhi, to mark this occasion. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar delivered his address at the event. During his address, he accused members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) of protecting terrorist groups.
India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said, "We must recognize that all is not well at the United Nations. Its decision-making process neither truly represents all its member states nor is it addressing the world's core needs. Debates at the UN are now deeply fragmented, and its functioning is clearly stagnant. Its response to terrorism exposes its credibility gaps, and development in the global South is being hampered."
He said, "On this remarkable anniversary, we must not lose hope. Our commitment to multilateralism, no matter how flawed, must remain strong. The United Nations must be supported, and our faith in international cooperation must be renewed. This meeting here today sends a message of unity and shared purpose."
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said, "It is deeply regrettable that even today we are witnessing major conflicts. These are not only impacting human lives, but also impacting the international community. The Global South has felt this pain. Change at the UN has become a major challenge today."
Accusing UN members of shielding terrorist groups, the Foreign Minister said that few examples illustrate the challenges facing the United Nations more than its response to terrorism. When a sitting Security Council member openly defends organizations responsible for a barbaric terrorist attack like the one in Pahalgam, what impact does this have on the credibility of multilateral institutions? Similarly, how much more selfish can the world become if, in the name of global strategy, only victims of terrorism are given equal status?
