SC Takes Suo Motu Notice of Infant Deaths in Delhi Stray Dog Attacks

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of a news report highlighting the increasing number of fatal stray dog attacks on infants in the national capital. Treating the matter with urgency, the Apex Court registered a writ petition to address the growing threat posed by unvaccinated stray dogs which have been claiming the lives of infants, injuring children and endangering the elderly through rabies infections.
A two-judge bench comprising Justice J. Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan described the situation as “very alarming,” noting that the news report contained “deeply disturbing” facts requiring immediate judicial attention.
The bench directed that the case, along with the referenced news report be placed before Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai for appropriate orders. The move signals the court’s intent to examine and address the issue of stray dog menace and its public health implications on priority.
