South 24 Parganas (The Uttam Hindu): Security agencies are on high alert ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. In a major success, 84 crude bombs and a rifle were recovered during a search operation in South 24 Parganas district.

The operation was carried out as part of a special drive by West Bengal Police. During the search, a rifle was also recovered from a pond, creating panic in the area. Following the recovery, a case has been registered and Bijoyganj Bazar Police Station has initiated an investigation.

Police are trying to ascertain the purpose behind storing these weapons and identify those involved.

Elections to be held in two phases

The West Bengal Assembly elections will be conducted in two phases this time, scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with results to be declared on May 4. In contrast, the 2021 elections were held in eight phases between March 27 and April 29.

Changes in voter list

A significant change has also been observed in the voter list. After a special revision, around 63.66 lakh names have been removed, while nearly 60.6 lakh voters are still under scrutiny.

Main contest between TMC and BJP

The primary contest is expected between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). TMC is once again contesting under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been in power since 2011. BJP, however, is yet to announce its chief ministerial candidate.

Apart from this, leaders like Humayun Kabir may influence new political equations, making the contest more interesting.
