Sonam Wangchuk's arrest case escalates to Supreme Court: Wife seeks unconditional release

New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): The case of the arrest of Ladakh's environmental activist and leader Sonam Wangchuk has reached the Supreme Court. His wife Geetanjali Angmo has approached the Supreme Court demanding the release of Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk was detained on September 26 under the National Security Act (NSA). Sonam Wangchuk's wife Geetanjali Angmo filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging her husband's arrest. She appealed to the Supreme Court to issue an order for Sonam Wangchuk's unconditional release.
In the petition, Geetanjali has called Sonam's arrest illegal. She said that even after a week, the grounds for the arrest have not been established, nor is any information available about Sonam. Sonam's wife has filed a habeas corpus petition seeking her immediate release. An early hearing in the case is expected to be sought from the Supreme Court on Monday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Geetanjali Angmo wrote an emotional letter to President Draupadi Murmu, demanding her husband's release. In the letter, she wrote, "My husband has been defamed for the past four years for working for the public good. He can never be a threat to anyone." She added that she does not know what condition her husband is in.
Four people were killed in the violence that erupted in the Union Territory on September 24. The violence occurred in Leh during protests demanding Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh. Around 90 people were injured during the violence.
On September 26, Sonam Wangchuk was detained on charges of inciting violent protests in Ladakh. He was subsequently sent to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan. Furthermore, the administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the deaths of four people. However, local residents have demanded a judicial inquiry.
