Supreme Court Seeks Immediate Vacation of Official Residence from Former CJI DY Chandrachud

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court administration has written a letter to the central government requesting to vacate the government bungalow allotted to former Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The letter states that the time limit for the permission of the former CJI to stay in the bungalow has expired.
The Supreme Court administration has said in a letter sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs that Bungalow Number Five located at Krishna Menon Marg in Lutyens Delhi should be vacated immediately. This bungalow is currently the official residence of the sitting CJI of the Supreme Court. According to the letter, the extended permission given to Justice Chandrachud to stay in this bungalow expired on May 21, 2025. Apart from this, the six-month period given under Rule 3B of the 2022 Rules has also expired on May 10, 2025.
It is worth noting that Justice Chandrachud was the 50th Chief Justice of the country from November 2022 to November 2024. His successor, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and current CJI Justice Bhushan R Gavai continued to stay in their previously allotted bungalows instead of staying in the official residence of the CJI.
When contacted for his reaction on the matter, Justice Chandrachud attributed it to his personal circumstances. He also said that the Supreme Court administration is aware of the situation. He clarified that he was allotted an alternative accommodation on rent by the government for a limited period, but it is not habitable due to being unused for a long time. He said that he is now waiting for the process of making it habitable again to be completed.
