New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court on Monday made a very strict and important comment during the hearing of a case regarding the working style of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The court said that the ED is crossing all limits and now there is a need to set some guidelines for it.

This case was related to the summons issued by the ED to some lawyers. These lawyers had given legal advice to the accused of economic crimes, due to which the agency had also sent summons to them. On this matter, the bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta took suo motu cognizance and expressed its displeasure.

The bench remarked, "ED has crossed the line. You cannot send summons to lawyers like this because they have advised the accused." The court expressed deep concern that such action will directly affect the independence of the legal profession. The court said that if this continues, any lawyer will be afraid to give fair advice to his client.

The Supreme Court clarified that rules should be set for the functioning of the investigating agency so that powers are not misused. This stance of the court can have a big impact on the investigation processes of ED in the future.
