Supreme Court slams Prashant Kishore's Jan Suraj: "Public rejected you, don't use court for politics

Patna (The Uttam Hindu): Prashant Kishore's party, "Jan Suraj," has faced severe criticism for challenging the results and process of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections in the Supreme Court. During the hearing on Friday, the Jan Suraj Party faced a sharp rebuke from the Supreme Court. A bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant asked the petitioner sharp questions and remarked that the Supreme Court should not be used as a platform for political gain and popularity.
Judges gave him a lecture when he came to court after losing
During the hearing, CJI Surya Kant reprimanded the lawyers representing the Jan Suraj Party. He sternly remarked, "When the public has completely rejected you in the elections, you are now resorting to judicial forums to remain in the news." The court noted that the party filed the petition after having lost everything in the elections. The judges questioned the petitioner's motives, stating that they must also prove their "goodwill" before the court.
Investigation will not be done at the behest of political parties
The court also clarified its stance on the issue of freebies. The bench stated, "We are investigating the issue of freebies, but this case is separate from that. We are facing a political party that has suffered a crushing defeat in the elections." The court stated bluntly, "We do not want to investigate the issue of freebies at the behest of any political party or out of desperation."
Under which law is the demand for cancellation of elections made?
During the hearing, Justice Joymalya Bagchi raised legal questions. He asked under which section of the Election Petition Rules could a demand be made to cancel an entire election? Senior advocate CU Singh, representing Jan Suraj, responded that he would no longer press the specific demand for cancellation, but the petition also sought other reliefs. He argued that the case involved corrupt practices that had affected free and fair elections and a level playing field.
Giving money to women was said to be corrupt conduct
It is worth noting that the Jan Suraj Party, founded by Prashant Kishore, filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. The party demanded a fresh election based on alleged illegal practices. Jan Suraj's main allegation was that women in the state were directly given ₹10,000 while the election code of conduct was in effect, which they described as corrupt practices. However, the Supreme Court has currently adopted a strict stance, dismissing the party's arguments.
