New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Due to the unrest in the Middle East and the Iran-Israel war, the global energy crisis is looming large. The heat of this global tension has now reached Indian kitchens. Amid reports of black marketing and illegal storage of gas cylinders in various cities across the country, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has taken a very strict and major decision, which will directly impact the kitchen and pockets of the common man.

PNG consumers will have to surrender LPG cylinders

According to a new and important order issued by the Petroleum Ministry, consumers who already have a piped natural gas (PNG) connection in their homes will no longer be able to retain a domestic LPG cylinder connection under any circumstances. The government has clarified that such consumers must surrender their LPG connections immediately. Those who do not do so will be completely barred from receiving LPG gas cylinder refills from state-owned oil companies or their distributors.

Why was this big and strict decision taken?

The government believes that having both PNG and LPG connections in the same household creates significant inequality in the gas supply system and leads to unnecessary duplication of resources. The primary objective of this ban is to make the domestic gas distribution system more transparent, systematic, and efficient. The government is enforcing consumers to source gas from a single source to prevent dumping and ensure access to all who need it.

There is no need to panic, the government has taken these big steps

To control the situation and allay public concerns, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has given clear assurances that domestic customers are being given priority in gas supply and that sufficient gas stocks are available for them. Dismissing rumors of a fuel crisis, the government has implemented the Natural Gas Supply Regulation Order 2026 to address the situation. Under this, major steps have been taken, such as increasing LPG production from refineries, curbing hoarding, and accelerating gas imports from countries like Algeria and Australia.

Additionally, to facilitate rural and BPL families, the government has increased the supply of kerosene under the Public Distribution System (PDS) as an alternative to LPG and has recommended increasing the use of coal and biomass locally. A three-member special monitoring panel has also been formed to closely monitor the situation.
