Train Drags School Van for 50 Meters, 3 Children Killed on the Spot, Several Critically Injured

Cuddalore(The Uttam Hindu): A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning near Chemmankuppam in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, where a passenger train collided with a school van at an unmanned railway crossing. Initial reports confirm the death of three children, while at least 10 others, including the van driver, sustained serious injuries.
The incident took place when the school van was attempting to cross the railway tracks. A train heading toward Chidambaram struck the van and dragged it nearly 50 meters, causing severe damage. The children who died were declared dead at the scene, and several others remain in critical condition at Cuddalore Government Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the van was carrying schoolchildren at the time of the crash. Locals were the first to respond and attempted to rescue those trapped before emergency services arrived. Preliminary investigations suggest the accident may have resulted from negligence on the part of the van driver.
Following the incident, angry parents and residents demanded stricter safety measures at railway crossings near school zones. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and district administration have launched a formal inquiry to determine the exact cause and assign accountability. Officials have assured that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation concludes.
