Tejas Mk1A Takes Its First Successful Flight: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Calls It a ‘Historic Milestone’

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing reached a remarkable milestone as the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk1A successfully completed its maiden flight today. The advanced fighter jet, designed and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), took off from HAL’s Aircraft Manufacturing Division in Nashik, showcasing India’s growing capability in cutting-edge aviation technology.
A New Era in Indian Aerospace Power
Witnessing this momentous achievement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed it as a “historic moment” for the nation and a proud leap toward an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Singh congratulated HAL’s engineers, scientists, and technicians for making the Tejas Mk1A a reality and emphasized that the aircraft represents India’s growing strength in indigenous defence production.
Boost for Indigenous Manufacturing
On the same occasion, the Defence Minister also inaugurated the third production line for the LCA Mk1A at HAL, which is expected to accelerate aircraft production significantly. HAL currently operates two production lines in Bengaluru, capable of building up to 16 Tejas jets annually, while the Nashik division adds an additional eight units per year. With the new line operational, India’s annual manufacturing capacity for fighter jets is set to increase substantially.
Sustainable Development in Focus
Just a day earlier, Rajnath Singh had inaugurated HAL’s ‘Mini Smart Township’ project, praising the organization for setting a new benchmark in sustainable development. “When the world is talking about protecting the environment, HAL has taken a practical step forward,” Singh said, adding that this model could inspire other industries to adopt eco-friendly growth strategies.
Delivery Timeline and Future Plans
Although the Indian Air Force (IAF) has not announced an official induction date for the Tejas Mk1A, HAL has confirmed that 83 aircraft will be delivered to the IAF within the next four years. Sources indicate that minor delays occurred due to the late arrival of American-built engines, but production timelines are now back on track.
Strengthening India’s Air Power
With this successful flight, the Tejas Mk1A program has entered its final phase before full-scale deployment. Defence analysts believe the aircraft’s enhanced avionics, radar systems, and combat efficiency will significantly boost India’s aerial defence capabilities. The Mk1A variant features advanced electronic warfare systems, beyond-visual-range missile capability, and improved maintainability, making it a world-class fighter in its category.
The successful maiden flight not only marks a new chapter for India’s defence aviation but also reinforces the nation’s determination to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and strengthen its indigenous production ecosystem.
