Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): Rebel Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, who vowed to build a 'Babri-style mosque' in West Bengal, has been suspended. Humayun Kabir had reached a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Baharampur. After receiving the news of his suspension, he left the meeting place. Humayun Kabir, who is adamant on building the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district, said that his new party will be formed soon. He will field candidates in 135 seats in the 2026 elections and will contest against the Trinamool Congress.

Humayun Kabir raised the political temperature in the state on Wednesday by announcing that he would lay the foundation stone of a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad on December 6th, overriding objections from the Raj Bhavan. He warned that any attempt by the state administration to stop him would be met with widespread protests. He said, "If the administration tries to stop us, the highway from Rejinagar to Behrampur will be blocked."

It should be noted that Humayun Kabir has switched parties several times, joining the Congress, TMC, BJP, and then back to the TMC. He had challenged district officials and accused them of acting as "RSS agents." The choice of December 6th for the mosque's foundation stone laying ceremony was seen as a political message. The Babri Masjid was demolished on that day in 1992. The TMC celebrates this day as "Struggle Day." The West Bengal government has also declared December 6th a holiday this year.
