Tragedy in Gujarat: Mahisagar River Bridge Collapses, Vehicles Plunge; 2 Dead

Gujarat (The Uttam Hindu) : A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday as a 43-year-old bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand collapsed during peak traffic hours. The bridge, which spanned the Mahisagar River, gave way suddenly, sending multiple vehicles plunging into the water below.
Disturbing visuals from the site show a large truck left teetering precariously on the edge of the partially collapsed structure, underscoring the severity of the collapse. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud cracking sound moments before a section of the bridge gave way.
According to initial reports, at least two people have died, and several others are feared trapped or injured. Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade, and local police, have rushed to the scene. A major rescue operation is currently underway to locate survivors and recover vehicles submerged in the river.
Authorities said the bridge, constructed over four decades ago, had been showing signs of wear and tear, but no major repairs or structural overhauls had been carried out in recent years. Traffic had been particularly heavy at the time of the collapse, which may have contributed to the tragedy. Local residents have expressed anger and concern over the incident, demanding accountability from government and civic authorities. “This was a disaster waiting to happen. We've complained about the bridge’s poor condition before, but no action was taken,” said one commuter who regularly used the route.
Officials have cordoned off the area and initiated an inquiry into the cause of the collapse. The Gujarat government is expected to issue an official statement soon. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has reportedly been briefed and may visit the site. Further updates are awaited as the rescue operation continues.
