Tragic End to Love Marriage: Woman Found Hanging in Jhansi, Family Alleges Murder

Jhansi (The Uttam Hindu): A love marriage in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi ended in tragedy when 21-year-old Mehak from Aligole Khidki area was found hanging in her room. About one and a half years ago, Mehak had eloped and married Vivek Ahirwar, a Hindu man from her neighborhood. While her in-laws claim it to be a case of suicide, her family alleges that she was murdered.
Mehak’s mother, Gudiya, accused Vivek and his family of harassing her daughter for money. She said, “After marriage, everything was fine initially, but later they started demanding cash and household items. When Mehak refused, they used to beat her.” Gudiya further revealed that Mehak had attempted suicide twice before. Despite this, the family sent her back to her in-laws’ home hoping things would improve.
On October 9, while Mehak’s family was away in Indore for labor work, they received news that she had allegedly hanged herself. By the time they returned to Jhansi, the police had already conducted the post-mortem. “My daughter was killed by Vivek and his mother,” Gudiya alleged, adding that her brother had seen the body being taken away and immediately informed the police.
Family members also claimed that Vivek frequently pressured Mehak to cut ties with her maternal family. “She was scared but couldn’t express it openly. She often told us over the phone that she was being threatened,” Gudiya said.
Kotwali Station House Officer (SHO) Rajesh Awasthi stated that preliminary investigations suggest suicide. The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem. Police have detained Vivek Ahirwar for questioning and are interrogating other family members. Vivek maintains that Mehak was under mental stress, though police have not yet confirmed this claim.
Mehak’s brother said, “Our sister was not happy. Even if it was suicide, her in-laws are responsible for pushing her to that point. The police should file a murder case and take strict action.”
