According to the Sahar police officer, both the men hail from Khulna and Gopalganj districts of Bangladesh. They had allegedly entered India illegally through West Bengal six years ago and were living in Kolkata since then. During their stay, the two had managed to obtain Indian passports for themselves and their children in 2024 using forged documents.

Police said that around 12:30 am on June 1, the couple along with their children reached Mumbai International Airport for immigration clearance. They were to catch a 2:30 am flight to Jeddah, from where they were to travel to Norway. However, during a routine check, immigration officer Umesh Dattatreya Nimbalkar got suspicious about their passports.
