Union Minister George Kurian resigns, President accepts resignation with immediate effect
Union Minister of State George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation with immediate effect following the end of his Rajya Sabha term.

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, George Kurian has resigned from his position in the central government. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation with immediate effect on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to an official statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President has accepted George Kurian’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers. With this decision, his tenure as a minister has come to an end.
The 65-year-old leader had been serving as a Minister of State in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third government since August 2024. He is regarded as a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has been associated with the party since its formation in 1980.
According to reports, Kurian’s term in the Rajya Sabha had ended, making it necessary for him to step down from the ministerial post. Sources indicated that the party did not nominate him for another Rajya Sabha term, following which he submitted his resignation.
Apart from his political career, George Kurian has also been associated with the legal profession. He has practised as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India. According to information available on the Ministry of Minority Affairs website, he was born on September 20, 1960, in Nambiyakulam, located in the Ettumanoor municipal area of Kottayam district, Kerala. He completed his early education in his hometown before earning undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in law.
George Kurian took oath as a Union Minister of State on June 9, 2024. He subsequently assumed charge in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying on June 11, 2024.
Before becoming a Union Minister, he served as Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities. He had also worked as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to former Minister of State for Railways O. Rajagopal.
