New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, accompanied by a committee of eminent members of the Sikh Sangat called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to submit recommendations regarding the safekeeping and appropriate display of the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’. These holy relics belonged to the founder of the Khalsa Panth, Dasam Pita Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and his revered wife Mata Sahib Kaur Ji.

The ‘Jore Sahib’ are a pair of sacred footwear—one of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj (right foot, 11 inches by 3½ inches) and one of Mata Sahib Kaur Ji (left foot, 9 inches by 3 inches).

The Puri family has been blessed to serve these relics for over 300 years. According to family history, their ancestor had the divine privilege of serving Guru Gobind Singh Ji directly. Pleased with his service, Guru Sahib granted him the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’ as a blessing to ensure his family and future generations remained under the Guru’s grace. The last custodian was the late Sardar Jasmeet Singh Puri of Karol Bagh, Delhi where the street was later named ‘Guru Gobind Singh Marg’ in honour of the relics.

Following his passing, his wife Manpreet Kaur approached Hardeep Singh Puri, one of the eldest family members to find a fitting home for the relics so that devotees could offer their prayers to the revered ‘Jore Sahib’. In this spirit, the relics were examined by the Ministry of Culture with carbon testing conducted to establish their authenticity and historical significance.

The committee has since submitted a detailed report to Prime Minister Modi recommending measures for the safekeeping and display of the relics. Puri noted that the Prime Minister has always shown deep respect for the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and affection for the Sikh Sangat.

Highlighting PM Modi’s commitment, Puri said that the last eleven years of his leadership have seen several compassionate and visionary decisions benefitting the Sikh community, including initiatives to enhance major Sikh religious sites and improve accessibility for pilgrims.
