West Asia on edge: PM Modi calls urgent security meet as India braces for impact
PM Modi to chair urgent security meet tonight to discuss safety of 8M+ Indians in Gulf countries and potential economic impacts

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In view of the rapidly deteriorating situation in West Asia, the central government has decided to conduct a high-level review. A crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will be held at 9:30 pm tonight, upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi's return to Delhi. The government is continuously monitoring the situation in the region and assessing potential impacts.
Over 8 million Indians in the Gulf, advisory issued
Over 8 million Indian citizens live in the Gulf countries. Additionally, a large number of Indian tourists and students are present in several countries, including Iran. In light of the current tensions, the Indian government has issued an advisory for its citizens and instructed embassies to remain vigilant. The government's priority is to ensure the safety of all Indians.
The meeting will be attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other senior officials.
Economic Impact and Energy Challenge
The instability in West Asia could also impact India's economy. Amid fears of disruptions in crude oil supplies and a surge in prices, the government is considering alternative energy sources. India has reduced crude oil imports from Russia in recent months, necessitating a new energy security strategy. International air routes have also been affected by the Iran-Israel tensions. Many flights operating from India have been diverted or temporarily cancelled, impacting both passengers and airlines.
India has previously launched special operations to evacuate its citizens from conflict-affected areas. In the current situation, the government may consider potential evacuation plans and emergency arrangements. It is expected that this issue will be discussed in detail at the CCS meeting.
The Prime Minister recently returned from a visit to Israel. He then visited Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. After two days of engagements, he will arrive in Delhi tonight and directly chair a security review meeting. The government's message is clear: the safety of every Indian citizen is a top priority, while appealing for peace and stability in the region.
