Woman Airline Pilot Sexually Harassed in Uber Cab in Mumbai; Case Registered Against Three

Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu) : A 28-year-old woman airline pilot was allegedly sexually harassed by an Uber cab driver and two others during a ride in Mumbai late on Thursday night, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. on June 19, when the woman was returning to her residence in Ghatkopar from South Mumbai. According to police officials, the victim had booked an Uber for the commute.
During the ride, the cab driver allegedly made inappropriate comments and gestures. Two unidentified individuals, believed to be known to the driver, reportedly joined the vehicle midway and also participated in the harassment, the woman later told the police. The woman, whose husband is a serving Navy officer, lives separately in Ghatkopar as he is currently residing at a Navy residential complex due to the unavailability of government accommodation for the couple.
The woman filed a complaint soon after reaching home, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. Based on her statement, a case has been registered against the Uber driver and the two accomplices under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.
“An FIR has been registered and we are working on identifying and locating the other two accused,” said a senior police official. “We are also reviewing CCTV footage and Uber’s ride records to corroborate the events.” Uber India has not issued a formal statement yet, but sources say the driver’s account has been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation. Police have assured that stringent action will be taken and the investigation is currently underway.
