Baratang Island is not only India’s only active volcano but also the sole active volcano in South Asia. It is located in the eastern part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, about 140 kilometers by sea from Port Blair, with a total area of 8.34 square kilometers, and has been declared a restricted area.
According to the Andaman administration, the first recorded eruption of the Baratang volcano occurred in 1787, and the volcano has been periodically active since then. Globally, there are currently about 46 active volcanoes, and Baratang’s continuous activity makes it a significant subject for scientific research and study.
