A shocking truth: Inhalers emit pollution equivalent to hundreds of thousands of cars

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Inhalers, used to treat respiratory illnesses and life-saving for millions, have become a major threat to our planet. A new American study has shockingly revealed that these inhalers are contributing to global warming. According to the study, inhalers used in the United States alone emit pollution equivalent to more than 500,000 cars each year.
The study, published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found that these inhalers have emitted the equivalent of 24.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over the past 10 years. The biggest culprits are metered-dose inhalers, or puffer inhalers, which account for 98% of the total emissions. These inhalers use a propellant called hydrofluoroalkane (HFA), a potent greenhouse gas, to deliver the medication to the lungs.
Researchers say safer alternatives exist. Dry powder inhalers and soft mist inhalers don't use any propellants, making them virtually harmless to both the environment and the body. Dry powder inhalers work by inhaling the patient's breath, while soft mist inhalers convert the medication into a fine spray.
According to researcher William Feldman, "This is a concern, but it's a very easy fix." He explained that very few patients specifically need metered-dose inhalers. Most patients can switch to a safer and more environmentally friendly dry powder or soft mist inhaler upon doctor's advice. This will neither impact their health nor harm the planet.
